MMA has been growing in both popularity and fanfare, and MMA schools seem to be popping up from nowhere. Our Mixed Martial Arts training is directed at gearing your physical techniques as if training for MMA competition. Although the MMA classes are intense, safety and correct techniques are a prime concern. This makes the classes applicable for the laymen student, or advanced MMA competitor. Vandry BJJ Academy’s MMA classes in Austin are primarily a mixture of Muay Thai drills, wrestling takedowns, and BJJ ground grappling techniques.
Many MMA schools in Austin and around the world, offer Mixed Martial Arts training as if MMA is a single disciple. Even the name of our sport, Mixed Martial Arts, clearly conveys MMA is a culmination of different styles and martial arts disciplines. At our Austin Academy we focus on the three areas of MMA: striking (Muay Thai and Boxing), Takedowns (Wrestling and some Judo), and the ground game (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and grappling). A big difference from a regular BJJ class, is the MMA classes are done without the gi. At Vandry BJJ in Austin, we provide shin pads and gloves in our MMA and Muay Thai classes to protect students while training at an intense level.
Muay Thai, also know as Thai Boxing is an effective stand-up fighting style utilizing elbows, knees, punches and kicks. Vandry BJJ Academy in Austin offers exceptional Muay Thai training. Like Jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai is not dependent on size, strength or gender. Muay Thai is a devastating martial art style that originated in Thailand, and is utilized by many modern day MMA competitors. Unlike most other striking martial arts such as Karate and Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai implements the most dangerous tools of the body for striking. For instance, Muay Thai kicks are not done in a snapping manner with ones foot; instead the entire body is used to kick with the shin – a sharp and rugged instrument compared to the easily breakable bones in the foot. Our Austin Muay Thai classes also provide excellent conditioning; you’d have a very hard time burning more calories while having fun at the gym. Feel free to come by the Austin Vandry Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy and watch a Muay Thai class, or call at (512) 585-1289 for more information.
