Fitness & BJJ: Cold and Flu Season

COLD AND FLU SEASON

Living in Austin Texas, we are exposed to extreme temperature changes during this time of year. Our bodies are not designed to handle these fluctuations in temperature; our systems will become stressed trying to adapt to the changes. Be aware and take extra care of yourself during this transition.

Below are some of the guidelines I use for my Personal Training clients that also apply when we train on the mat.

24 hours

Far too many people return to work or their workouts before their bodies are ready. I recommend a 24 hour window of feeling good before returning to normal activity.

Supplements

Help boost your immune system! Increase your intake of Vitamin C and start taking garlic capsules, which acts as a natural antibiotic. I have taken these for years and will not do without them. One brand of garlic capsules, Kyolic, does not leave a garlic odor. Another product, Umcka is an amazing product! It is made from a flower used by the Zulu tribe in South Africa; they have been using it for thousands of years for respiratory issues.

Disinfect everything!!

If you work in an office environment, be aware of others using your phone or keyboard, they are bacteria factories. If you have children who are school age be aware of toys or objects they may share with others. Always have disinfecting wipes and hand sanitizer handy and use them often.

From the neck down

If you are sick from the neck down—you need to be at home resting!! Swollen glands, sore throat, etc., you need to be resting.  We will often tell ourselves, “It’s OK, I’ll be OK”, well actually, NO, you will not be OK and neither will anyone else who comes in contact with you during that time. Stay home!!
