I wanted to change my pattern of writing on injury topics each month and focus on something else this time. I wanted to touch on the topic of community. BJJ 3rd Degree Black Belt William Vandry has done such an outstanding job of developing community within his school and it has affected my life and I wanted to share.
I have been going through a very stressful transition in my life, selling a house, and moving to another. As you are all aware, this is very stressful, and this is not exactly the best time to be doing what I’m doing. I bought the second one prior to getting the first one sold, which was never a good idea in the first place. I think I’ll eventually learn…. Anyway, it is no secret that I’m not the most accomplished carpenter, or electrician, or plumber, or (insert trade here).
I would like to say that I have been able to find a brother from William’s school for each of my issues at my new house. It’s not so much that William has guys that do these things for a living, it’s that these guys were willing to help me with my situation, and have graciously gone out of their way to do so. One guy in particular, and he just so happens to be my primary training partner, has been at my house for several weeks with a laundry list of tasks that far outreach my capabilities, but not his. He has done so much for me, and done it without fail. Another brother is building me a fence, and another is moving my stuff for me while I am out of town for Christmas. The list goes on and on. I have so much respect for them on the mat, but the brotherhood extends beyond that.
I appreciate you guys more than you know. I hope to be able to extend a hand to each of you if my particular expertise can be of assistance. I will do it humbly and with pleasure, as that’s what brothers do.
William, I am forever in debt to you for building such a successful BJJ academy, and for being a leader and developing an atmosphere that breeds loyalty and brotherhood. I will be there in that academy, bleeding, sweating, and learning, until the day I die.

"Make sure you thank the BJJ Doctor Jeff, Richard and Marshall. They took good care of me, but I will still make them do the push ups if they mess up on the drills!" - Rigan Machado
